THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas (UST) Asian Studies Society (ASSOC) gained accreditation from the Philippine National Commission for United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) for its projects that promote culture and education.

ASSOC Vice President for External Affairs Monica Aligam said the accreditation will open more opportunities for the society and motivate them to organize programs that raise the awareness of the Filipino youth.

“The accreditation can give ASSOC more opportunities to become exposed to the issues of society which can lead the students to be better citizens of the Philippines,” Aligam said.

Aligam, who handled the society’s application, added that the similarities between the principles of ASSOC and UNESCO led to the society’s decision to apply for accreditation.

ASSOC presented its projects titled One with Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) held in 2014 and 2015, and Model ASEAN Meeting held in 2015 and 2016. Both programs, which focused on increasing the awareness about ASEAN’s goals and functions, were aligned with UNESCO’s objectives.

Along with ASSOC, the UNESCO Club of UST also gained accreditation this year.
