THE UST History Society (HSTSOC) was recognized as new member of a committee under the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) on Aug. 16.

HSTSOC is now part of the Local Historical Committees Network (LHCN), a segment of NHPC tasked to monitor and coordinate with various external historical groups engaged in the collection and preservation of historical materials in different parts of the country.

“[W]e want to help, as history students in the University of Santo Tomas, in the effort to promote our history and preserve our heritage,” HSTSOC President Dennis Amarante told the Flame in an online exchange.

“Now that we are recognized by other historical organizations, we can establish connections with them and with the National Historical Commission of the Philippines itself, which can help us in the promotion of history,” he said.

As new member of the committee, HSTSOC plans to help promote the projects of NHCP and LHCN to the Thomasian community, Amarante said.

“We hope that in the future, we can help in the effort to promote our history through the help of the LHCN by participating in their projects such as the creation of the ‘Encyclopedia of Philippine Town Histories’ and organizing projects aimed not only to influence the Thomasian community, but to all,” he added.

NHCP is responsible for preserving the country’s historical legacy and commemorating significant events and personalities in the Philippine history.

The oath-taking ceremony of the society took place at the Museo Ning Angeles in Pampanga. F
