Communication professor Samuel Ramos dies at 49

DEPARTMENT OF Communication and Media Studies professor Samuel Ramos Jr., better known by his students as “Sir Samu,” died on Sunday, Aug. 1, at 49.

The cause of his death was not disclosed.

The University announced his passing and expressed its condolences to his family on its official social media accounts on Wednesday. 

The Thomasian family mourns the passing of Dr. Samuel Jr. T. Ramos, a faculty member of the Department of Communication and Media Studies of the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters. We grieve with the family of Dr. Ramos on his sudden and untimely passing. Eternal rest grant unto Dr. Ramos, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine upon him. May he rest in peace,” the University wrote in a Facebook post.

Ramos finished his bachelor’s degree in communication arts, major in advertising (visual communication) at the Philippine Women’s University Manila in 2000, and earned a master’s degree in communication management at Asian Institute of Journalism and Communication in 2013.

He finished Doctor of Communication at the University of the Philippines Open University in 2020.

He worked as a professor in the University for seven years.

Ramos also taught at the De La Salle University from 2007 to 2014 before teaching in UST.

The late professor had also worked as a broadcast journalist in ABS-CBN Integrated News and Current Affairs for almost two decades.

UST Faculty of Arts and Letters and UST-Communication Arts Students’ Association expressed their sincere condolences and sympathies to the family, friends, and colleagues of Ramos via Facebook and Twitter.

Kevin Trinidad, a Communication Arts alumnus and a former student of Ramos, told The Flame that Ramos was his ‘favorite’ professor and reminisced his memories with him.

“As a student, favorite ko siya kasi siya ang prof na mapagbigay sa grades at gusto niyang makapagtapos mga students niya. Lagi siyang nagtatanong dati sa amin, kailan kayo ga-graduate, sana nandito pa ako. […] Ang lesson [na] natutunan ko sa kanya [ay] dapat isasapuso mo ang [mga] ginagawa mo,” Trinidad said. F
