THE FACULTY of Arts and Letters (AB) Women’s Volleyball Team failed to notch a victory against the College of Architecture (Architecture) Women’s Volleyball Team as errors pestered their second game in the elimination round of the 2016 Thomasian Goodwill Games.
AB started blazing in the first set by swooping attacks and errors from the opposing team, but Architecture fought head-to-head against AB and claimed the second and third sets, 25-13, 23-25, and 23-25 in the game held Friday at the P. Noval Court.
The service aces and spikes of Architecture’s Laureen Ochoa gave AB a close fight during the early moments of the first set, 12-11.
But AB managed to pull away with a 12-2 run through the attacks of Samantha Makayan and Mariell Isanan.
Consecutive offensive errors from Architecture team captain Patricia Tingjuy sealed the set for AB, 25-13.
AB continued to show their court dominance during the second set by mounting a seven-point advantage over Architecture, 17-10. But Tingjuy’s solid attacks and AB’s consecutive errors tied the score at 23.
A sloppy offensive campaign from AB paved way for Architecture to extend the game, capping the second set, 23-25.
Both teams maintained a tight match as AB’s Elyanna Dayanghirang unleashed a spike, countering the attacks of Architecture, to even the game at 14.
However, errors from the women in maroon enabled AB to lead by three points.
But the tables turned for AB as they committed errors that allowed Architecture to take the lead, 23-24. The Dapitan-based squad bowed to Architecture after failing to receive their attack, 23-25.
AB team captain Jade David said the team’s lack of communication inside the court cost them the game.
“[Nakakalungkot] kasi nanalo na kami nung first set tapos maganda naman sana ‘yung second set namin kaya lang siguro nagkulang lang sa communication ‘yung team,” David said. “Siguro i-i-improve namin sa training ‘yung mga atake pa [ng] team and ‘yung communication…para mas buo pa kami sa loob.”
The AB Women’s Volleyball Team will face the Faculty of Medicine and Surgery. The schedule of the game is yet to be announced. F VANN MARLO M. VILLEGAS
