The University of Santo Tomas maintained its spot as the third-best university in the Philippines in the 2025 Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings.
UST remained within the 1501+ bracket globally, scoring 10.5-25.1 in the latest edition of the assessment.
“We are delighted to see that the University of Santo Tomas has maintained its ranking in band 1501+ in the THE World University Rankings 2025. This is a fantastic achievement, amid great and growing international competition which sees a record-breaking 2,092 universities ranked in the 21st edition,” THE chief global affairs officer Phil Baty told The Flame through a representative.
The Ateneo de Manila University emerged anew as the leading institution in the country, ranking within the 1001-1200 band overall, followed by the University of the Philippines (1201-1500). UST was tied with the De La Salle University, Mapua University and Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology for third place.
The institutions were ranked according to their teaching (29.5%); research quality (30%); research environment (29%); industry (4%); and international outlook (7.5%).
The España campus performed best in international outlook, where it ranked 518 globally after obtaining a score of 64.4, lower than the 67 score it received in the previous edition. It made its biggest improvement in research quality, scoring 33.6 from the previous year’s 25.8.
UST improved slightly in teaching, where it got a score of 19.8 from 19.6 in the previous edition. The University lagged behind research environment with a score of 9.7, although it was an improvement from 9.5 previously. Meanwhile, UST posted a score of 20.4 in industry, lower than the 20.7 it obtained in the previous year.
Launched in 2004, THE World University Rankings presents a set of comparative data that assesses the performance of universities across the globe every year.
