PRESIDENT FERDINAND Marcos, Jr. has appointed UST Journalism alumna Marie Charlotte Tang as the Philippines’ non-resident ambassador to Ethiopia.
Tang, who graduated from the University in 1988, was designated to her post on Dec. 31, the Presidential Communications Office announced in a Facebook post.
She earned her master’s degree in Asian Studies from the University of the Philippines.
A career diplomat, Tang is also the country’s envoy to Kenya since 2021 and was assigned to 11 other African countries, namely Burundi, Comoros, Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Malawi, Rwanda, Seychelles, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Somalia, where she became its first Philippine ambassador.
She serves as the permanent representative to the United Nations (UN) Environment Program and the UN-Habitat, which deal with environmental issues and human settlements, respectively.
Tang’s career in the foreign service also included working as deputy undersecretary for bilateral relations and ASEAN Affairs at the Department of Foreign Affairs, consul general and minister at the Philippine Embassy in Hague, Netherlands, consul general in Guangzhou, China and junior officer in Beijing, China.
She headed the ASEAN Committee in Nairobi in 2023, where she oversaw the activities towards increasing the regional group’s participation in Kenya. F
