THE FACULTY of Arts and Letters carried out leadership changes in four of its departments and its student welfare board this academic year.
The designation of new AB administrators was announced by Artlets Dean Prof. Melanie Turingan in a faculty assembly held on Thursday, Aug. 7.
New chairpersons were appointed for the Asian Studies, Journalism, Legal Management and Sociology departments. The chairpersons of the remaining nine AB departments were retained.
Prof. Jeremaiah Opiniano now heads the oldest journalism program in Southeast Asia, succeeding Asst. Prof. Felipe Salvosa II, who assumed as the first chair of the department last year.
Opiniano served as the department’s coordinator from 2013 to 2017 before becoming the director of the UST Research Center for Social Sciences and Education. He was recently promoted to full professor, making him the first faculty member of the program to earn the rank since it was established in 1929.
Asst. Prof. Edelberto Bunquin, a lawyer and litigation practitioner, has been designated as the new department chair of Legal Management, replacing lawyer and instructor Teodoro Lorenzo Fernandez.
Instructor Jonathan Libut has been appointed as Asian Studies department chair, succeeding instructor Ma. Regina Agustin.
Instructor Jade Harley Bretaña has been named chairperson of the Sociology department, succeeding Asst. Prof. Antonio Tobias. Bretaña, a former board member of the Philippines Sociological Society, specializes in issues related to digital cultures and marginalized communities.
Opiniano, Bunquin and Libut are doctorate degree holders while Bretaña is a candidate for obtaining the highest academic degree.
The faculty’s Student Welfare and Development unit is now led by lawyer Erinn Mariel Perez, who succeeded English instructor Emelito Sarmago. The unit handles matters related to student welfare, including discipline and violations of university regulations. F
