TWO ARTLETS students claimed the top two spots in an international speech competition hosted by a Thai university, the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB) said.
Legal Management sophomores Amber Adricula and Athena Cruz secured first and second place, respectively, in the annual competition hosted by the English program of Walailak University School of Liberal Arts in Thailand last Aug. 30.
“We sincerely and proudly congratulate Amber Louise L. Adricula and Athena Alessandra Sruz of 2LM2 for their outstanding achievement in the International Speech Competition,” AB said in a Facebook post on Monday, Sept. 1.
This year’s edition was conducted via Zoom under the topic “The Role of Gen Z in Shaping the Future,” which explores how the youth makes an impact on different areas such as climate activism, social media influence, entrepreneurship, educational reform and political engagement.
The competition featured a prepared speech in the first round, where participants were asked to deliver a five-minute talk in front of a camera after a 30-second grace period. The second round gives participants two minutes to deliver an impromptu speech, also with a 30-second grace period.
Contestants were judged based on their speeches’ content (35 marks), language competency and fluency (45 marks) and presentation (20 marks).
Adricula and Cruz, both graduates of the UST Senior High School Humanities and Social Sciences strand, received 3,000 baht or about P5,300; and 2,000 baht or P3,500, respectively. Meanwhile, 1,000 baht or about P1,700 was given to the contestant who secured third place.
All contestants received a certificate of merit in gold (80-100 marks), silver (70-79 marks) and bronze (60-69 marks) based on their scores.
