
TWO ALUMNAE of the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters were feted in the 21st Lasallian Scholarum Awards, an annual contest recognizing exemplary national and campus media coverage of issues affecting young people.
Jocelyn Valle, who graduated from the UST Journalism program in 1995, received the outstanding published feature article on youth and education in a nationally circulated publication award.
Her feature story, “Is homeschooling for you and your child?” published in the Philippine Daily Inquirer, traced the Department of Education’s introduction of homeschooling in 1997 as an alternative delivery mode for learners unable to attend formal schooling due to medical or family circumstances.
It also emphasized that homeschooling differs from the online learning setup implemented during the COVID-19 pandemic
Valle has works published in several media outlets, including YES! Magazine, PEP.ph, The Daily Tribune, Lifestyle.INQ, Cosmopolitan Philippines, Esquire Philippines, Preview Magazine, Smart Parenting and Real Living, focusing on education, lifestyle and cultural reporting.
Another Journalism graduate, Lian Buan, was conferred the outstanding media personality award for her reports on government corruption and human rights.
Buan is a a senior reporter at online media entity Rappler. According to her profile page, Buan specializes in legal reporting and has reported extensively on prison conditions, anomalies in high-level procurements and politics in the judiciary.
The awards, which recognize outstanding stories across print, online, video and film categories from both professional and student media entities, were given on Tuesday, March 17, at The Verdure, Henry Sy Sr. Hall at DLSU.
This year’s Lasallian Scholarum Awards carried the theme “empowerED” to honor outstanding stories on the country’s youth and education.
This year’s judges were screenwriter Clodualdo del Mundo, Jr., Assoc. Prof. Anne Frances Sangil of the DLSU Department of Literature, Academe Foundation executive director Sachie Reyes, National Youth Commission assistant secretary Michelle Mae Gonzales, Asst. Prof. Christian Esguerra of the UST Journalism department and DLSU University Student Government president Lara Capps. F
