LEGAL MANAGEMENT (LM) emerged as champion in this year’s Athena Cup volleyball tourney after sweeping Journalism, 26-24, 25-23, and 25-19, on Wednesday at the Seminary Gym.
The two teams found themselves neck-and-neck in the first frame that resulted in nine deadlocks. Rex Morales led Journalism in the set until LM’s Wayne Parulan’s attacks proved too furious for the opposing team.
Journalism fired back in the second frame and maintained its lead almost throughout, but its errors allowed LM to chase a five-point deficit to arrive at a 21-point deadlock.
Russel Wilfred Estrada’s attacks nabbed Journalism a few points back in the third set but the team still struggled to keep up with LM’s four-point lead at 17-13.
LM team captain Alpha Mayo Jambalos told the Flame he felt “surreal” after winning.
“Hindi namin in-expect na makakapasok kami sa finals kasi alam naming sobrang lakas ng [Journalism], considering na magagaling mga players nila,” Jambalos said. “Ang strategy namin [ay] ‘yung legacy of excellence na gusto talaga naming [maiwan] sa LM kasi matagal na naming gustong mag-champion.” F
