INTENSE OFFENSE fueled the UST Growling Tigresses’ first win in the UAAP Season 86 at the expense of the UE Lady Warriors, 63-46, on Sunday, Oct. 1.
Tigresses Jane Pastrana and Reynalyn Ferrer dropped a scoring bomb in the second half, spoiling the efforts of the Lady Warriors to come back during the season opener of the women’s basketball at the UST Quadricentennial Pavillion.
The first quarter opened with a tight match due to the continuous fouls committed by both teams. However, UST’s Rachelle Ambos and Tacky Tacatac roared an early offense with back-to-back layup points to end the opening quarter, 18-15.
UE maintained its close gap against UST during the second quarter after keeping up with the offense of the Growling Tigresses, 29-28. But Tigresses’ shooting guard Pastrana drained another three-point shot to beat the buzzer, ending the first half with a four-point lead, 32-28.
In an attempt to bounce back, the Lady Warriors outscored the Growling Tigresses, 12-5, at the start of the second half, resulting in a three-point lead by the Warriors, 37-40.
But the Tigresses roared back with an offensive barrage as they took over the Lady Warriors with a 26-6 lead in the fourth quarter. UE was overthrown by the four three-pointers delivered by the Tigresses.
Pastrana led her team to seal a dominant win against UE with a double-double, tallying 20 markers, grabbing 10 boards, and two steals with great efficiency from the three-point arc. Ferrer contributed a double-double of 17 points, 11 rebounds, and two steals.
Lady Warrior Diane Pedregosa scored 13 points and one steal.
The Growling Tigresses will face the Adamson Lady Falcons on Wednesday, Oct. 4, at the Adamson Gymnasium. F
