THE UST Golden Booters overwhelmed the UE Red Warriors with a commanding victory, 4-0, in Round 2 of the UAAP Season 86 men’s football tournament on Thursday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.
UST showcased its prowess as defender Jarred Regis delivered the final blow in the 90th and five-minute extension with a precise header off a corner kick, allowing the Booters’ return in the winning column.
Midfielder Tarshish Garciano took charge early on, setting the tone for UST’s dominant performance. His well-timed strike in the 45th minute gave the Golden Booters a 1-0 lead.
This early goal served as a catalyst, paving the way for UST’s control throughout the rest of the match.
Regis scored a goal during the 45th and two-minute extension in the first half giving UST a 2-0 advantage.
After the first half, the Golden Booters maintained their dominance as Garciano scored another point capped off by a header in the 70th minute to bury UE down by three goals to none.
Regis sets the tempo for UST, firing the final corner kick to seal the victory.
Veteran winger Chris Valderama, who was named the man of the match, provided crucial assists for two of UST’s goals, showcasing his experience and playmaking ability.
UST head coach Marjo Allado credited his team’s strategic approach and improved offense pattern for the win.
“Smart strategies and set pieces, this is the first time this season that we scored three goals from corner kicks,” Allado told The Flame.
“We trained for that and at least it translated in the match,” he added.
The win strengthens UST’s push for a final four spot. The España-based team improve its record to 3-3, while UE remains in sixth place with only three points.
The Golden Booters will look to avenge their first-round defeat when they face the second-seeded Ateneo Blue Eagles next Thursday, April 11, at the same venue. F
