THE UST Golden Sox suffered their first defeat in the UAAP Season 87 baseball tournament after yielding to the Adamson Soaring Falcons, 11-4, on Sunday, March 2, at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex.
Both teams moved to a 1-1 record, putting them in a four-way tie along with UP Baseball Team and DLSU Green Batters.
“We were hit by errors, and that was really a big factor in why our opponents got ahead of us… There’s nothing we can do—errors happen,” UST catcher Raymund Vargaz told The Flame.
Adamson came out swinging in the first inning, plating two early runs as second baseman Lawrence Mercado drove in a two-RBI hit, 2-0.
UST star Harry Geronimo answered back in the bottom of the second, crossing home plate off a solid knock from rightfielder Ybbrahim Degollacion to cut the deficit to 2-1.
In the third inning, Vargaz evened the score at 2-all, capitalizing on a well-placed double from Season 85 MVP Justine Rosales.
The Falcons took control in the fourth inning after back-to-back hits from Joao Severino and John Tupig put them ahead by two runs, 4-2.
Adamson’s Tupig another run in the sixth inning before UST fought back as Degollacion and shortstop Charlie Belgar crossed the plate off a clutch hit from Beronilla, 5-4.
In the eighth inning, however, the Falcons exploded with six runs to seal their first victory in the season.
The Golden Sox will look to bounce back as they take on the defending champions NU Bulldogs on March 19 at the same venue. F – Rishna Joy Maglinao
