  • THE UST Golden Sox pulled off a shocking comeback victory over the defending champions NU Bulldogs, 12-10, in the UAAP Season 87 baseball tournament on Sunday, April 6, at the Rizal Memorial Baseball Stadium.

UST stunned the erstwhile unbeaten NU with an eight-run explosion in the eight inning to snatch the victory.

With a 3-4 record, the España-based crew rose to solo fourth place, while the top-seeded Bustillos squad slipped to 6-1.

To begin the match, the Bulldogs let out a five-run barrage in the top of the first frame. They then added more runs in the fifth and sixth innings to bury the Golden Sox, 8-0.

UST, however, finally broke through in the bottom of the sixth inning when Season 85 MVP Justine Rosales drove in a two-run homer that sparked momentum and cut the deficit by half, 8-4.

In the eight inning, the Bulldogs scored a couple more runs before the Golden Sox turned it all around.

John Carlo Beronilla fueled the comeback with a two-RBI single that plated Harry Geronimo and Timothy Caldo to cut the deficit to 10-6. Veteran pitcher JR Vargas kept the pressure on with a double, 10-all.

To break the deadlock, Timothy Caldo delivered a two-RBI single that sent Jesus Cabigao and Justine Rosales home for the lead, 12-10.

NU tried to respond but Rosales held down defensively with a clean throw to put out Herald Tenorio and Gio Gorpido, keeping UST in control for the win.

The Golden Sox will look to extend their winning streak as they square off against the Adamson Soaring Falcons on April 9, Wednesday, at the same venue. F – Rishna Joy Maglinao
