THE UST Junior Golden Spikers secured their first victory of the UAAP Season 88 boys’ volleyball tournament with a 25-19, 27-25, 25-23 sweep of the Adamson Baby Falcons on Sunday, Sept. 28, at the Ateneo Blue Eagle Gym.
Team captain Rainier Lorayes delivered another stellar outing with 19 points, while Palarong Pambansa standout Karl Escobal chipped in 12 markers.
Lorayes and Escobal anchored the España-based squad’s late surge in the opener to take the set, 25-19.
UST trailed for most of the second set but the España side then clawed back from a four-point deficit in the second frame, with Escobal hammering back-to-back points to steal the set, 27-25.
The Junior Golden Spikers raced to a 13-8 cushion in the third, but Adamson responded with a five-point run to tie the game,
The Baby Falcons stayed level until 23-all before Lorayes sealed the sweep, 25-23.
Brice Malinao led the San Marcelino squad with 10 points in the loss.
The Junior Golden Spikers will gun for back-to-back wins when it faces the DLSZ Junior Spikers on Sunday, Oct. 5, at the same venue. F
