THE UST Lady Booters kicked off their UAAP Season 88 women’s football campaign with a gritty 1-0 victory over the UP Fighting Maroons on Saturday, Sept. 20 at the Ayala Vermosa Sports Hub in Cavite.
Fresh from a bronze-medal finish last season, UST showed grit and composure to secure a winning start.
Midfielder Rica Gerona provided the breakthrough in the 67th minute, unleashing a long-range strike that sailed past UP goalkeeper Julian Arrojado.
Both squads struggled to find rhythm in the first half, as the Diliman squad’s early chances failed to hit the mark.
The Espana-based squad leaned on its backline to withstand UP’s late surge, as goalkeeper Lizlie Garcia stood tall to deny the Maroons’ attempts in the dying minutes.
