IT WAS a heartbreaking exit for Alas Pilipinas after falling short to four-time Asian champion Iran in the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship on Thursday, Sept. 18, at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Despite a valiant effort, the national team suffered a 25-21, 21-25, 25-17, 23-25, 22-20 loss at the hands of the 16th-ranked Iran.

The home team was on the verge of a historical win, but a kill-block from Kim Malabunga was overturned for a net touch, 19-all. Iran then went on to seize control of the momentum for the victory.

Alas captain Bryan Bagunas still lauded the team’s fighting spirit against Asia’s powerhouse and expressed gratitude to the fans who showed their support.

“We are so happy, and I think we [have] shown to all Filipino fans, that we have a future… We are very thankful for their support,” he said postgame

“Thank you for all the Filipinos for the support, I hope you continue the support for the men’s volleyball team,” he added.

Meanwhile, UST’s pride and Alas libero Josh Ybañez delivered a solid performance in the defensive end, contributing nine successful receptions and six excellent digs.

Alas came out firing in the opening frame, capitalizing on Iran’s 11 errors while committing only five of their own to take the first set, 25-21.

The visiting team answered back in the second, protecting a steady four-point cushion to level the match, 25-21.

A pivotal 10-4 surge midway in the third set propelled the Filipinos to a commanding 25-17 finish.

The Iranians refused to fold and delivered a late push in the fourth set, escaping with a 25-23 win to extend the match.

World’s No. 16 showcased its composure in the final set taking a 10-6 advantage early. But Alas wouldn’t break in front of the home crowd as captain Bryan Bagunas delivered two crucial points to overtake Iran, 12-11.

Both squads traded points deep into crunch time, 18-18.

Bagunas once again led the helm for Alas with 22 points, while Leo Ordiales and Marck Espejo logged 21 and 15 points, respectively. F
