THE UST Golden Booters escaped the rookie-laden DLSU Green Booters, 1-0, to begin Round 2 of the UAAP Season 88 men’s football tournament on Sunday, Oct. 26, at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.
Trez Mariñas notched the lone goal of the match after exploiting a loose ball from DLSU goalkeeper Edcel Lauron in the 64th minute to claim their second straight win.
With the win, UST climbed to a 3-2-2 win-draw-loss slate to hold their spot at fourth, while DLSU dropped to a 2-2-3 record.
Golden Booter Chris Valderama had a first look at a goal, but his shot went over the post at the 11th minute.
Both teams traded attempts but failed to convert and ended with a goalless draw until the two-minute stoppage time in the first half.
It was a tighter affair early in the second half the España squad was kept at bay until Mariñas lobbed the shot that sealed the match.
DLSU tried to mount a comeback late in the stoppage time but goalkeeper Mark Daig was quick to sweep the perimeter.
The Golden Booters will look to keep the momentum on their side as they face the UE Red Warriors after a long break on Nov. 6 at the same venue. F
