
THE UST Golden Tigresses made quick work of the winless San Beda Lady Red Spikers in straight sets, 25-21, 25-9, 25-17, to complete a Round 2 sweep in the Shakey’s Super League (SSL) Pre-Season Unity Cup on Friday, Oct. 17, at the San Andres Sports Complex in Manila.
Senior lefty spiker Reg Jurado led the Tigresses with 13 points built on 10 attacks and three aces in the dominant win.
The Tigresses unleashed a massive 13-3 barrage capped off with a block and a crosscourt kill from rookie opposite spiker Julia Balingit, 16-7.
San Beda captain Angel Habacon led scored four straight points to cut her team’s deficit by three, 24-21. Balingit, however, was quick to respond with a fiery down-the-line attack to seal the set.
Momentum remained on the side of the España squad as two kill blocks from rookie middle blocker Lianne Penuliar triggered an 11-1 blitz to start the second salvo.
Despite errors piling up for UST, outside hitter Bien Arasan fired a crosscourt kill to seal a dominant 25-9 set-win.
Both teams went neck-and-neck in the third frame until UST fired a 4-0 run capped by a cutshot from Jurado to widen the gap, 12-7.
UST did not look back after Jurado’s kill block gave them the victory, 25-17.
Middle blockers Penuliar and Marga Altea combined for 14 points for the Tigresses.
Habacon paced the Lady Red Spikers in the loss with 11 markers.
The twice-to-beat UST will seek to extend its win streak against the Ateneo Blue Eagles in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, Oct. 21, at the same venue. F
