FUELED BY last year’s championship heartbreak, Sofiah Pagara and Khy Progella completed the UST Tiger Sands’ golden double following a dominant showing in the UAAP Season 88 women’s beach volleyball on Sunday, Nov. 30.
The Alas Pilipinas tandem captured their first UAAP beach volleyball crown with a 21-8, 22-20 sweep of NU Lady Bulldogs at the Sands SM by the Bay in Pasay City.
Last season, UST’s six-year-long championship streak came to an end at the hands of the Lady Bulldogs.
This season, however, the duo cruised through the elimination round with an undefeated record, without dropping a single set.
UST fired from all cylinders in the opening frame, racing to a 13-point lead to overwhelm NU’s Honey Grace Cordero and Kizil Quijote, 21-8.
Season 87 Rookie of the Year Progella led the scoring in a tighter second set, but the Lady Bulldogs caught up to extend the match at 20-20.
Progella delivered a clutch kill to reach championship point, while a net-touch error from Cordero sealed UST’s tenth overall women’s beach volleyball crown.
The 19-year-old Progella also snared her first Most Valuable Player plum. F
