  THE FORMER chairperson of the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Department of Sociology died at the age of 86 due to heart failure last Oct. 21. Alice Bulos, who graduated from UST with a master’s degree in social and behavioral sciences, taught sociology in the University from 1951 to 1971. In 1967, she became the chair of the Department of Sociology but resigned in 1972 to join her husband, Dony Bulos, in the United States. Dubbed as the “Grand Dame of the Filipino-American Politics,” Bulos, together with her husband, founded the Filipino American Grassroots Movement which is a voter registration drive to encourage the involvement of the Filipino American community in the political process.
