A GRADUATE of the UST Political Science program and former government counsel has been tapped to lead the College of Law of San Sebastian College-Recoletos (SSC-R) Manila.

The appointment of lawyer Edwin Carillo, a three-time bar examiner, as law dean was announced by SSC-R in a Facebook post on June 26.

Carillo earned his bachelor’s degree in Political Science from the Faculty of Arts and Letters in 1988 and obtained his law degree from the UST Faculty of Civil Law. He passed the Bar examinations in 1994.

He began his legal career as a paralegal at Abad and Associates before joining the office of the late Senator Raul Roco, where he eventually led its legal staff.

Carillo later entered private practice, specializing in labor, civil and criminal litigation. He co-founded the Creencia Carillo and Baldovino Law Offices, where he practiced for nearly 15 years before joining the Office of the Government Corporate Counsel (OGCC), an agency under the Department of Justice, in 2011.

President Benigno Aquino III appointed him assistant government corporate counsel in 2014. At the OGCC, Carillo headed its education, research and other services team, which handled the legal affairs of government entities, including state universities and colleges. He worked with the OGCC until 2018, then returned to private practice and established the Creencia Carillo and Velasco law firm.

Alongside his legal practice, he has taught political and administrative law, land registration, legal ethics, legal forms and writing and trial technique in various law schools.

The Supreme Court appointed him a bar examiner in legal ethics during the 2011 Bar examinations and in criminal law in 2023. He again served as an examiner for remedial law and legal and judicial ethics with practical exercises in the 2025 bar examinations.

Carillo is also the author of “Bar Review Companion on Legal Ethics and Practical Exercises,” published by Central Books. F
