GOLDEN SPIKERS mainstays Dux Yambao and Gboy de Vega are set to maximize their final years of UAAP eligibility and return to UST to bolster their Season 89 roster.
Both players confirmed the decision to The Flame, expressing high desire to continue representing the school, and make the most out of their last dance with the España-squad.
“We still really want to play for UST… It’s our last chance, and we might regret it if we don’t grab this opportunity we have right now,” Yambao said.
“Aside from our love for UST, we’re not rushing anything in our lives. If we’re lucky enough, a [professional] team might pick us up. But for now, we’ll stay with UST,” de Vega added.
With fellow teammate and three-time MVP Josh Ybañez already confirming his return to the Golden Spikers in May, the veteran trio are now poised for one final title bid in 2027.
Having been with the squad since Season 85, the three stars recently graduated with a degree from the Institute of Physical Education and Athletics in June, and must pursue graduate studies to continue their stints with the Golden Spikers.
The three-time team captain Yambao underscored the significance of being one of UST’s seasoned members, highlighting the importance of being a role model.
“We have to be the seniors… We need to lead the team and guide them to do what’s right, and be role models in whatever we do,” the Season 87 Best Setter said.
Following a rusty return to Season 88 after an ankle injury forced him to miss three games, de Vega urged his veteran teammates for one final title push after multiple silver and bronze medal finishes.
“When we return to practice, we’ll really force ourselves to lock in… We’ve been through the Finals in our first two years, and then had two straight bronzes,” de Vega said.
