THE PHILIPPINE Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) brought back the mobile earthquake simulator to the UST Quadricentennial Park for the third time this year on Tuesday, Sept. 22, to promote disaster awareness among Thomasians.
The machine, a hollow structure with posters plastered on the wall presenting earthquake safety guidelines, simulates an intensity eight earthquake within the space to allow students to practice the standard “drop, cover and hold” protocol.
Previously brought to campus in January and June, the machine is part of the UST Facilities Management Office’s (FMO) partnership with the PHIVOLCS.
“We use this opportunity not only to experience simulated ground shaking but to better appreciate the importance of remaining calm and practicing the appropriate response protocols when an earthquake occurs,” FMO assistant director Albert Surla told The Flame.
The PHILVOLCS booth also distributed pamphlets and safety guides related to earthquake and tsunami preparedness.
Thomasians can try the mobile earthquake simulator from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. until Thursday, Sept. 24. F
