THE UST Growling Tigresses dominated the FEU Lady Tamaraws, 88-42, to clinch their fourth straight win in the UAAP Season 89 women’s basketball tournament, on Wednesday, October 14, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.
Tigress Oma Onianwa tallied another double-double with 20 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks, with Karylle Sierba following with 18 points and 7 rebounds.
Sierba credited head coach Haydee Ong’s system for motivating the Tigresses, saying the team has yet to reach its full potential.
“The team’s effort has been really, really good. Hopefully, we can keep it up. And hopefully, we can finish the first round on a high note,” Sierba told The Flame.
Sierba and Onianwa spearheaded the Espana-based squad’s early surge, building a 25-10 lead in the opening quarter.
The Tigresses sustained their double-digit cushion in the second quarter, with the Lady Tamaraws’ Amyah Espanol closing the first half at 43-22.
UST starters kept the Tigresses in control in the third canto, stretching their lead to 57-33 heading into the final period.
The Tigresses then erupted for a 31-9 fourth quarter barrage, with Rachelle Ambos drilling a three-pointer in the closing minute to cap UST’s biggest lead of the game.
Espanol led FEU’s scoring with nine points and five rebounds.
The Tigresses will look to extend their winning streak against the Ateneo Blue Eagles on Saturday, Oct. 17, at the Quadricentennial Pavilion. F
