UST names new Philo, Socio heads, admin officials

The University has appointed new administrative officials, including the heads of the Philosophy and Sociology departments, the Office of the Secretary-General (OSG) said.

Asst. Prof. Marella M. Bolaños will be succeeding former Chair Assoc. Prof. Jovito Carino as chair of the Philosophy department, according to an OSG memorandum released last August 1.

Bolaños obtained her bachelor’s, master’s, and doctor’s degree in philosophy at the University, and has worked and presented papers on various topics such as feminism, philosophy of education, children, and philosophy for childhood. 

The UST Department of Philosophy welcomed the new appointment, citing her background in leadership and membership in various international philosophy associations.

The Sociology department will now be handled by Asst. Prof. Louie Benedict R. Ignacio. He succeeded Prof. Clarence M. Batan, who is also a researcher at the University’s Research Center for Social Sciences and Education. 

Ignacio obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in Political Science and Bachelor of Arts in Political Science degree at the University. The new chair earned his Master of Arts in Sociology degree at the Ateneo de Manila University. 

Ignacio has been working at the University for more than four years, with research backgrounds in urban governance and sociology of education and politics.

Also appointed were Dr. Augusto Antonio Aguila (Co-Director, Center of Creative Writing and Studies), Asst. Prof. Maria Regina Arriero (Assistant Director, Office of Student Affairs), Asst. Prof.. Jeremiah Opiniano (Director, Research Center for Social Services and Education), Assoc. Prof. Zendel Rosario M. Taruc (Chair, Department of Filipino), Asst. Prof. Karen Katrina V. Trinidad (Chair, Department of Psychology), and Assoc. Prof. Alan Rodelle M. Salcedo (Chair, Department of Chemistry).F  – P. R. Sabado
