AN INSTRUCTOR of the UST Faculty of Arts and Letters was awarded the Mananaysay ng Taon (essayist of the year) for his entry in a national essay writing contest organized by the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino (KWF).
Mark Anthony Angeles, a faculty member from the Filipino department, was recognized during the commission’s Gabi ng Parangal for this year’s Sanaysay ng Taon last Friday, Aug. 25.
His winning piece, “Mula Homo Luzonensis hanggang Maginhawa Community Pantry: Isang Panukalang Timeline ng Kasaysayan ng mga Wika ng Kapilipinuhan,” tackled how language has served Filipinos through shared culture and social interactions.
“I hope that it will inspire Thomasian students to rediscover our identity by going back to our roots. Language, history, and culture are the foundations of Filipino, journalism, communications, and creative writing subjects,” Angeles told The Flame.
Angeles works as a full-time instructor at the UST College of Education but teaches Panimulang Pagsasalin, Pamamahayag sa Filipino and Multimedia Storytelling at the Faculty of Arts and Letters. He is also a resident fellow of the UST Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies and a committee member of the UST Sentro sa Salin at Araling Salin.
The judges for this year’s Sanaysay ng Taon contest were University of the Philippines Diliman professors Jayson Petras and Jimmuel Naval and De La Salle University professor Rowell Madula.
The Sanaysay ng Taon is an annual competition that encourages essayists in the country to submit their original works. This year’s topic was about the sociolinguistic and interactional approach to Philippine indigenous languages that presents a critical analysis toward linguistic modernization.
