UST honors 57 Artlets profs at Dangal ng UST Awards

FIFTY-SEVEN PROFESSORS from the Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB) were recognized for their years of service and contributions in their respective fields during the Dangal ng UST Awards held on Friday, Aug. 15.

This year’s Dangal ng UST Awards marks the second onsite ceremony since the Covid-19 pandemic. The annual event covered the academic years (A.Y.) 2021 to 2022, 2022 to 2023, and 2023 to 2024.

A total of three AB faculty members were recipients of the Hall of Fame Award, a recognition given to those who received more than three awards in Dangal ng UST throughout the years.

Department chairs Prof. Joyce Arriola of Communication and Prof. Joselito Delos Reyes of Creative Writing were among those who were awarded the Hall of Fame after receiving the Gawad San Alberto Magno in the years 2017, 2019, 2020 and 2021.

Creative writing professor Prof. Chuckberry Pascual was also conferred the award for obtaining the Gawad San Alberto Magno for the year 2017 and 2021, and the Gawad Santo Tomas in 2021. 

Five AB faculty members were awarded the Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz after achieving local and international recognition for their contribution to their respective fields.

Pascual was conferred the award for winning Best Translated Book for his Filipino version of “Ilustrado” by Miguel Syjuco, the Kid’s Choice Award for Chapter Book Category in 2022 for “Catch a Falling Star” and for Best Anthology in Filipino for his non-fiction anthology book on sexual orientations and gender identity.

Prof. Faye Abugan of the Communication department, who is also the former assistant director of the Communications Bureau, was honored for winning Best Faculty Adviser for Television in the college division.

Assoc. Prof. Ralph Galan of Creative writing was also recognized for winning first prize in the English to Filipino Category for the Hubad Ta! Hubad Na! Translation Contest and the Short Story in Cebuano Category for Chair in 2023.

Other recipients of the Gawad San Lorenzo Ruiz were English department’s Prof. Veronico Tarray,o who won the Dr. Matthew A. Eichler Memorial Fellowship Award for Excellence in Research in 2022; and Journalism department’s Asst. Prof. Felipe Salvosa II who received the Servus Dei Award at the 2021 Pasig Catholic Mass Media Awards.

Meanwhile, the University named eight awardees from AB for the Gawad San Alberto Magno award, which honored faculty members for their outstanding contributions in research and literature.

Pascual received his fourth Gawad San Alberto Magno for Outstanding Artist, Best Creative Work and Best Published Research in the academic year 2022 to 2023.

Assoc. Prof. Nerisa Guevara was granted the Gawad San Alberto Magno award for her contributions in performing arts for the years 2021-2022. She won the Outstanding Artist and Best Book awards.

Other Artlets awardees were Philosophy chair Prof. Marella Ada Bolaños (Best Published Research), Prof. Jove Jim Aguas (Outstanding Researcher), Prof. Alejandro Bernardo (Best Published Research), Prof. Paolo Bolaños (Best Published Research), Assoc. Prof. Augusto de Viana (Best Book) and Prof. Veronico Tarrayo (Best Published Research).

Philosophy Prof. Rhochie Avelino E. Matienzo and Political Science Asst. Prof. Milrose P. Llenas were named Outstanding Teachers and received the Gawad Santo Tomas, which is awarded to educators that made exemplary contributions to the improvement of their fields of expertise.

Forty-five Artlets professors were recipients of the Gawad Benavides award, which are bestowed to those who rendered more than 20 years of service to the University.

The Artlets professors who served in the University for 40 years were Assoc. Prof. Maria Rosario Aranda, Asst. Prof. Regina Panlilio, Asst. Prof. Josephine Placido, Asst. Prof. Emelita Samala and Asst. Prof. Anna Maria Gloria Ward.

For 35 years of service, the recipients of the Gawad Benavides award were Aguas, Prof. Lino Baron, Asst. Prof. Myrna de Vera, Prof. Marilu Madrunio, Assoc. Prof. Jose Ricarte Origenes, and Prof. Luciana Urquiola.


Asst. Prof. Chrisma Bangaoil, Assoc. Prof. Maria Vida Caparas, Asst. Prof. Oscar Diamante, Prof. Elmer Hibek, Atty. Danielito Jimenez, Asst. Prof. Jose Arsenio Salandanan, Prof. Michael Anthony Vasco and Asst. Prof. Marvin Zapanta received the Gawad Benavides award for 30 years of service.

History department chair Assoc. Prof. Archie Resos received the Gawad Benavides award for rendering 25 years of service alongside Prof. Augusto Antonio Aguila, Asst. Prof. Edelberto Bunquin, Asst. Prof. Jean Celino, Asst. Prof. Zenaida de Luna, Assoc. Prof. Ralph Galan, Prof. Carlos Manapat, Asst. Prof. Abigail Pagalilauan, Asst. Prof. Ma. Zenia Rodriguez, Asst. Prof. Antonio Tobias IV, Assoc. Prof. Wilfredo Valois and Prof. John Jack Wigley.

The Artlets awardees who were recognized for their 20 years of service were the faculty dean Prof. Melanie Turingan, Department of English chair Prof. Rachelle Lintao, Political Science chair Assoc. Prof. Dennis Coronacion, Journalism chair Prof. Jeremaiah Opiniano, Economics chair Prof. Alain Jomarie Santos, Asst. Prof. Josephine Alarcon, Asst. Prof. Froilan Alipao, Asst. Prof. Marc Aldous Baccay, Asst. Prof. Arvin Benas, Asst. Prof. Milrose Llenas, Asst. Prof. Allan Joseph Maglalang, Assoc. Prof. Frederick Rey and Rona Catherine R. Repancol.

University administrators Vice Rector for Academic Affairs Prof. Cheryl Peralta and former Office of Student Affairs director Maria Cecilia Tio Cuison received the Gawad Benavides award for 25 and 35 years of service, respectively.

Other deans honored during the ceremony were Prof. Patricia Empleo of AMV – College of Accountancy for rendering 25 years of service; and Prof. Rey Donne Papa from the College of Science and Prof. Gezzez Giezi Granado of the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management, who both served for 20 years.

Held at the Quadricentennial Pavilion, this year’s Dangal ng UST Awards carried the theme “Gurong Tomasino: Gabay at Panday sa Kinabukasang Matagumpay.” F
