Three Artlets honored in 10th Distinguished Thomasian Alumni Awards

THREE ARTLETS graduates were recognized for their excellent service and contributions to the University and the global community in the 10th Distinguished Thomasian Alumni Awards.

Asst. Prof. Faye Martel Abugan of the Communication department, Senate Deputy Secretary Marivic Laurel Garcia and Maria Yolanda Crisanto were bestowed the Distinguished Thomasian Award on Nov. 22 at the UST Buenaventura Garcia Paredes, O.P. building.

Abugan graduated from UST with a degree in Communication Arts in 1993 and later earned her master’s degree in communication at the Ateneo De Manila University in 2008.

She began working in the University’s Educational Technology Center as a faculty advisor in 2004 and became its digital broadcasting unit head in 2016. From 1994 to 2016, Abugan served as an executive producer of various television programs on TV5.

She is a also founding head of the UST Tiger Media Network, the University’s digital media arm. With three decades of service to the University, Abugan now handles UST communication-related courses.

Garcia completed her secondary education at UST High School and graduated with a Legal Management degree in 2002.

Known as the youngest deputy secretary in the Senate, she provided assistance in crafting policies, such as the Bangsamoro Organic Law, the Ease of Doing Business Act, the Government Optimization Act and a law increasing the age threshold for statutory rape.

She held several positions in the Senate, including its executive director for legislation and bureau director of the Committee Affairs Bureau.

Crisanto, who earned her Communication Arts degree in UST in 1986, holds over 35 years of experience in corporate communications.

She became a senior assistant vice president for corporate communications in East West Banking Corporation in 2001, before becoming the vice president for corporate communications in Metropolitan Bank and Trust Company in 2004.

Since 2009, Crisanto has worked as the corporate communications and the chief sustainability officer of Globe Telecom.

The UST Alumni Association Inc.’s Distinguished Alumni Awards selects and honors graduates of the University who have shown exceptional service and impact in their fields of expertise. A total of 64 Thomasian alumni were awarded this year. F
