RENOWNED WRITERS and professors encouraged Artlets and budding writers to include research in their writing process — be it fictional or academic.

Prof. Clarence Batan said in a forum held yesterday.

Guest speakers Himala scriptwriter Ricky Lee and Ligo na U, Lapit na Me author Eros Atalia, both Palanca awardees, said extensive research is important in the field of writing and filmmaking.

Matinding research ang kinakailangang i-consider mo para [sa isang akda] at sa kung ano ‘yung kayang gawin ng producer at hindi kayang gawin ng producer,” Atalia said.

He added research provides the reality in every fictional work through the facts and experiences a writer gathers while making his piece.

Furthermore, Lee urged the students and budding writers to participate in the process of “immersion” or creative research in the course of their writing.

Totoong mahalaga ‘yung facts and figures na hinahanap natin. Pero kami (scriptwriters) when we do creative research para sa pelikula o para sa nobela, ang [hahanapin] namin ay ‘yung tao sa loob, ‘yung kwento sa loob, [at] ‘yung lugar sa loob,” he said.

Echoing Atalia and Lee, Assoc. Prof. Imelda De Castro emphasized that “detail” is important in writing and this will only be achieved through research.

The forum dubbed “Sineng Tuklas” was part of the two-week long celebration of the Research Fortnight of UST RCCESI, the research arm of UST in the fields of culture, art, humanities, social sciences, and education. MIKKAH F. FACTOR
