HST, LegMa, ASN, CA, SCL open basketball league on a high note

THE TEAMS of History, Legal Management (LegMa), Asian Studies (ASN), Communication Arts (CA), and Sociology tasted their triumphs in the season opener of AB Sportsfest basketball tournament held Wednesday.

Both History and LegMa escaped Political Science (PolSci), 55-52 and 44-43, respectively. With no wins and two losses, Political Science was eliminated in bracket A.

History’s JV Vibandor and Joseph Alfonso spoiled the heroics of PolSci’s Anton Maglaqui throughout the game. Vibrandor and Maglaqui earned 19 and 18 points, respectively.

PolSci’s fouls enabled the strong-spirited LegMa to escape their opponent by a slim one-point advantage, 44-43.

Meanwhile, ASN gave Journalism its first taste of defeat in bracket B’s first game, 39-31, after a thrilling 31-31 deadlock at the end of regulation. SP Espinosa, Jasper Runa, and Lester Cay pitched in eight points for ASN in the five-minute extension while Journalism failed to score a basket.

Led by Janrey Garrido, defending champion CA proved their court supremacy after overthrowing Philosophy, 64-44. Garrido scored 15 points while Prince Marcos added 13 points.

Philosophy’s John Emmanuel Tan managed to score 12 points despite struggling throughout the game but Garrido and Marcos were too much, sending Tan’s team to its winless record.

Despite facing penalty situations in the first and third quarters, Sociology managed to edge past Behavioral Science (BES), 41-38. Rowi Pascual, who scored 18 points, ushered his team to victory.

But BES recovered from its first game fiasco and upset English Language Studies (ELS), 48-37, recording a 1-1 standing.

The combination of Giuseppe Punzalan and Jason Sarabia overpowered ELS’ Cedric Juan, who scored 21 points. Punzalan and Sarabia fired 18 and 12 points, respectively.

With two minutes remaining in the third frame, the game had to be stopped because ELS’ Karlo Quimoro suffered a knee injury after inadvertently clashing with BES’ Ethan De Vera in an attempt to bring the ball to their side. In the end, BES dominated the whole ballgame, 18-8, 15-30, 36-21, and 48-37.

Similar to the volleyball tournament, the bracketing for the basketball preliminary rounds is as follows: LegMa, PolSci, and History (A); Journalism, ASN, Economics (B); Philosophy, CA, Literature (C); and BES, Sociology, and ELS (D).

The remaining games of the elimination round will be held today at Felix Huertas Court. The winning teams from each bracket will proceed to the semifinals scheduled next week. F MIKKAH F. FACTOR
