THE Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB) Men’s Volleyball Team demolished the Faculty of Science (Science), 25-19 and 25-17, in their opening Goodwill Games match.
AB’s immediately strong offense established their 6-3 lead and left Science trailing for the rest of the set.
Service errors and apparent miscommunication plagued Science, leaving the ball hanging in their court multiple times, allowing AB’s score to double theirs, 18-9.
Despite AB’s own service errors, Mon Laurence Madeja’s hammering spikes and Mark Jason Pangan’s couple of service aces closed the first set at 25-19.
A series of errors from AB and close saves by Jason Tormon allowed Science to close the gap from 19-14 to 19-17.
Nevertheless, AB’s defense proved too strong, preventing Science from scoring another point. Pangan’s three service aces sealed the game at 25-17.
AB’s coach John David Subiere said his players properly executed the plays they focused their training on.
“[Ang] nagpanalo sa’min is ‘yung receive namin tsaka ‘yung set play namin kasi ‘yan yung tri-naining namin kahapon, kagabi. Nag-training kami before game ngayon at ‘yan ‘yung talagang tinuro ko sa kanila, na mag-focus kami sa service [at] receive para may play kami,” Subiere said.
The coach noted that AB must not relax despite their strong performance.
“Katulad ng sinasabi ng iba, bilog ‘yung bola. Maraming pwedeng mangyari. Kahit malakas naman kami, ‘yun nga, bilog pa rin ‘yung bola. So depende na lang.”
The next game of AB Men’s Volleyball Team will be against the Faculty of Medicine on Friday, 6:00 p.m., at the P. Noval Covered Court. F
