THE UST Golden Booters kicked off their UAAP Season 87 men’s football campaign with a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the UE Red Warriors on Sunday, Sept. 15.
UE’s firm defense denied last season’s bronze medalist a reverse comeback at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.
John Magallon allowed the Red Warriors to lead the first half after penetrating the Booters’ defense in the 41st minute, 1-0.
UST regrouped briefly by showing aggressiveness and sharp ball movement, but UE maintained their dominance and executed a formidable defense.
Midfielder John Nico converted a penalty kick during the 51st minute, extending the Recto-based squad’s lead to 2-0.
It was a different story in the second half when UST rookie striker Renan Ballespin found the back of the net in the 64th minute to cut the deficit to 2-1.
UST’s momentum was cut short when hotshot TJ Garciano and center-back Jarred Regis sustained cramps and a left ankle injury, respectively.
UST winger Chris Valderama attempted a hit from close range but failed to convert the move into a point.
Golden Booters captain and goalkeeper Miguel Abada acknowledged that the team underestimated their opponents.
“We were adjusting to the new environment and conditions,” Abada told The Flame.
“Because of our previous game with UE, we underestimated them and that’s really bad because in UAAP you should not underestimate your opponent,” he added.
The UST Golden Booters will seek to bounce back as they face the defending champions UP Fighting Maroons on Thursday, Sept. 19, at the same venue. F – Rishna Joy Maglinao
