THE FILM about the life of student activist Edgar “Edjop” Jopson will be shown at UST in September.
The biopic Edjop will be screened at the University on Sept. 2 as part of a tour that will bring its cast and filmmakers to campuses across the country ahead of its theatrical release.
Directed by Katski Flores, Edjop follows Jopson, a prominent student leader and former president of the National Union of Students of the Philippines (NUSP) who became a key figure in the resistance against the Marcos dictatorship.
He was killed by government agents in September 1982 at the age of 34.
The biographical film also features UST Journalism faculty member Asst. Prof. Christian Esguerra, as former president Ferdinand Marcos Sr.
“Pupuntahan namin kayo para ikuwento ang buhay ng isang estudyanteng piniling makialam, tumayo at hindi sumuko,” Flores said in an interview with Pelikula Mania.
(“We will come to you to tell the story of a student who chose to care, stand up and never give up.”)
Rather than a traditional film screening, the campus conversations will feature exclusive footage and discussions with the film’s cast and filmmakers, allowing students to engage with the themes explored in Jopson’s story and the issues surrounding his activism.
Edjop tackles Jopson’s journey as a student activist who questioned those in power and stood by his convictions, while also portraying his life as a son, friend, husband and father.
The film’s official page describes Edjop as more than an episode of the past, calling it a story about “courage, love, conviction” and the choices people make when they can no longer remain silent in the face of injustice.
Elijah Canlas stars as Jopson, while Jodi Sta. Maria portrays his wife, Joyette Jopson. The ensemble cast also includes Menchu Lauchengco-Yulo, Kakie Pangilinan, Cedrick Juan, Teroy Guzman, Gab Pangilinan and Issa Litton.
Edjop is set to open in cinemas nationwide on Sept. 16. F
