ECCLESIASTICAL FACULTIES guest professor Fr. Edgar Javier, SVD died on Tuesday, Sept. 8, the University announced in a Facebook post.
He was 77.
Javier, fondly known as “Egay,” was a religious scholar of missiology, sociology and anthropology who taught at the UST Ecclesiastical Faculties for 22 years.
Born on May 5, 1949, he finished his degree in Philosophy at the Divine Word Seminary in Tagaytay City and integrated himself into the congregation of the Society of the Divine Word.
Javier finished his post-graduate studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, finishing a Doctorate in Missiology in 1985.
After his graduation, he taught at numerous institutions in the Philippines, China, Vietnam, Australia, the Fiji Islands as a visiting professor for Theological programs.
As a scholar, he also wrote the books “The Mangyans of Mindoro, Philippines: Progress through Christian Community Building,” “Justice, Peace, and Human Development in the Pacific,” “Dialogue: Our Mission Today” and “Research Techniques and Thesis Writing: A Practical Guide.”
He also served as the director and professor at the Divine Word Institute of Mission Studies in Tagaytay City.
In a Facebook post, Javier’s former student Reamor Bacdayan recalled how the late priest taught by example by living out the Church’s mission to proclaim God and bringing the Gospel to others.
“Fr. Edgar did not only teach us about mission; through his life, he reminded us that the Church is always called to proclaim Christ and to bring the Gospel to others,” Bacdayan said in his post.
“His wisdom, dedication, and love for the mission of the Church have left a lasting mark on the many seminarians whom he taught and accompanied.” F
