THE UST Golden Spikers’ semifinals hopes in the V-League Collegiate Challenge are now in jeopardy after bowing to the FEU Tamaraws in a 25-20, 25-21, 25-13 sweep on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the Gameville Central Park.
With the loss, the España-squad concluded their campaign with a 3-4 win/loss card, while the Tamaraws remained atop the standings with an unblemished 6-0 record.
Both teams traded blows to kick off the match, but a quick attack from Chad Absin gave the Tamaraws a slim advantage midway through the opening frame, 16-12.
The Spikers were unable to keep up however, as an attack error from JJ Macam placed FEU on the board, 25-20.
UST leveled the pace in the second salvo, as an off-the-block hit from Rainier Lorayes placed the match at a 15-all deadlock.
A late 5-2 blitz from the Tamaraws, capped off by another UST attack error, sealed back to back sets in FEU’s favor, 25-21.
The España squad continued to play catch-up in the third set, as a down-the-line hit from Luis Miguel extended FEU’s cushion, 16-10.
The Tamaraws capped off their dominant performance with a 10-3 run, as a kill from Joshua Idong cemented the sweep, 25-13.
Absin led FEU to victory with 14 markers built on nine attacks and five blocks, while Dryx Saavedra chipped in 10 attacks and a service ace.
Gboy de Vega paced the Spikers on his 25th birthday with 12 markers, while Vryvin Catinsag added three blocks. F
