AFTER LAST year’s bridesmaid finish in the team category of Pautakan, the Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB) failed to secure a spot in the top three of this year’s intercollegiate quiz contest.
The AB team composed of the Flame Literary Editor Arvee Gomez, Imee Camille Advincula, Hannah Luise Baltazar, Augustus Bostrous Guco, Jezaree Corpuz, Marc Gjeremie Cheung, and John Robert Andres landed fourth place with 170 points — only five points away from the second runner-up Faculty of Pharmacy.
Earning 240 points, the defending champion Faculty of Engineering added laurels to its collection, while the Alfredo M. Velayo – College of Accountancy settled for first runner-up with 230 points.
AB tied with AMV during the average round of the finals leg, leaving Engineering in second place. But the reigning title holder staged a comeback after dominating the difficult round, where every answer was worth 20 points.
Pautakan 2015 individual category champion Gomez also executed a dismal run this year after placing third with 105 points.
Engineering likewise claimed the victory in the individual category with 115 points, while Accountancy grabbed the second place with 110 points.
Hardly converting points in the easy round, Gomez rose during the average and difficult rounds where she scored 45 and 60 points, respectively.
Hall of Famer AB held eight championships in the contest, including a five-year winning streak from 2002 to 2006. Now on its 39th year, the Varsitarian-organized Pautakan is the longest running intercollegiate quiz contest in the country. F – MIKKAH F. FACTOR
