Marcos names Thomasian prof as member of UNESCO national commission committee

PRESIDENT FERDINAND Marcos, Jr. has appointed UST Department of Filipino Assoc. Prof. Arthur Casanova to the UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines, the office that oversees programs that honor the country’s international commitments in education and culture.

Casanova’s designation as a member of the commission’s communication and information committee took effect last Oct. 3, the Presidential Communications Office announced in a Facebook post.

In 2020, Casanova was named commissioner of the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino, a regulating body of the national language, before serving as its chairperson in the same year. 

Casanova, who has handled undergraduate courses on Philippine literature and research, graduated with a Secondary Education degree major in Filipino at the Mindanao State University (MSU) in 1982. He earned his master’s degree in Education with specialization in Filipino Linguistics in 1992 and doctorate degree in Philosophy in Linguistics and Literature in 1999 at the Philippine Normal University (PNU).

Casanova is a recipient of multiple accolades, namely the Gawad Sulo for Eminent Alumni from PNU in 2017, Sarimanok Award for Outstanding Alumnus in the Field of Literature and the Arts in 2011 and Outstanding Teacher from Metrobank in 1999. The Thomasian professor also served as president of the Metrobank Foundation Network of Outstanding Teachers and Educators for a year.
