PRESIDENT FERDINAND Marcos, Jr. has appointed UST Economics alumna Samantha Camitan to the Office of the Solicitor General (OSG), an independent and autonomous body attached to the Department of Justice.
Camitan’s designation as assistant solicitor general, the second highest official in the OSG, took effect on Friday, Nov. 8, the Presidential Communications Office announced in a Facebook post.
Camitan graduated from UST in 2006. Prior to her appointment, she served as senior state solicitor of the same office, where she provided legal services to government departments, primarily in civil law matters.
An assistant solicitor general is appointed by the President upon the recommendation of the solicitor general. To be eligible for the post, he or she must be a citizen of the Philippines, a Philippine Bar member, of recognized competence and have practiced law for at least four years.
The OSG is headed by Menardo Guevarra, who took the role of solicitor general after Marcos assumed office in 2022.
The OSG has been considered the country’s “law firm” since 1901. It was formerly known as the Bureau of Justice until the issuance of Executive Order No. 94 in 1947. F
