THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas failed to enter the Global 2000 list of the 2025 Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) as it was surpassed by other educational institutions in terms of research performance.
CWUR ranked 21,462 nationally accredited universities this year, with only the top-performing institutions making it to the Global 2000 list.
“University of Santo Tomas was ranked, but did not make the Global 2000 list. This is mainly due to the university scoring lower than those appearing in the league table in the research performance indicator,” the CWUR media team told The Flame.
Only two Philippine universities were included in the list, namely, the University of the Philippines Diliman (1,784), which improved 11 spots from 1,795; and the University of the Philippines Manila (1,677), which slipped 40 notches from last year’s 1,637.
The Asian Institute of Management, which ranked 1,890 previously, lost its spot in the top 2000 this year.
CWUR’s rating system assesses universities based on four key indicators: education (25%), employability (25%), faculty (10%), and research (40%).
The research category is divided into four indicators: research output, which counts the total number of research articles; high-quality publications or articles published in top-tier journals; influence, which is measured by articles appearing in highly influential journals; and citations, which tracks highly-cited research articles.
Established in 2012, CWUR publishes a global ranking based on objective data without relying on surveys or data submitted by universities. It began by ranking the top 100 universities and has since expanded to list the top 2,000 educational institutions worldwide. F
