A PHILOSOPHY professor from the Faculty of Arts and Letters received on Friday the highest recognition for theses and dissertations conferred by the Komisyon ng Wikang Filipino.

Emmanuel de Leon was awarded the Gawad Julian Cruz Balmaseda for his dissertation written in Filipino titled “Ang Intelektuwal na Pamana ng mga Pangunahing Tomasinong Pilosoper sa Kasaysayan ng Pamimilosopiyang Filipino: Quito, Mercado, Hornedo, Timbreza, Abulad, at Co.

De Leon said he wrote his dissertation in Filipino because he believes the language can carry the concepts of philosophy.

He was granted a plaque of recognition and a cash prize of P100,000.

De Leon obtained his bachelor’s degree in Philosophy from St. Augustine Seminary in Calapan, Oriental Mindoro. He earned both his master’s and doctorate degrees in Philosophy from the University of Santo Tomas.

He specializes in Filipino Philosophy, Philosophy of Pluralism, and the philosophies of Martin Heidegger.

The Gawad Julian Cruz Balmaseda Award recognizes the best thesis and dissertation in the fields of science, mathematics, and social science written in Filipino. It aims to encourage writing and publication of original works, including textbooks and reference materials written in Filipino and other Philippine languages through incentives, grants, and awards.
