HIGH SCHOOL Varsity-Team B (HS-B) Volleybelles pounced on an erratic Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB) Women’s Volleyball Team and posted their first win in this year’s Thomasian Goodwill Games.
HS-B grabbed the first set through seething attacks, while AB managed to bounce back in the second. However, the Dapitan-based squad faltered in the last of their three-set duel, 21-25, 25-22, and 19-25, yesterday at the P. Noval Court.
HS-B team captain Joann De Guzman launched her sharp spikes that denied any momentum for AB in the first set. AB then suffered consecutive service errors and gave away a 17-10 lead for HS-B.
AB cut the deficit to three, capped off by a drop ball from Viana Angeline Lazo, 24-21, but service errors kept plaguing their offense, which allowed HS-B to claim the first set.
AB strived to keep the lead during the early parts of the second set, thanks to the service aces from Samantha Makayan and HS-B’s faulty receives.
De Guzman refused to back down as she buried two consecutive kills on AB’s court, 19-20, but Lazo’s counterattacks sealed the comeback effort of her team in the second frame.
Eager to get the first win in the season opener, HS-B mounted a six-point advantage in the start of the last frame, 12-6.
HS-B’s Catherine Enero joined forces with De Guzman to deliver solid spikes that AB could not handle, however, Enero’s forceful but wayward hits contributed points to the trailing team, 23-17.
AB’s service errors further marred their chances in the crunch time, surrendering the last set to the HS-B.
“Disappointed sa team since five months na kaming nag-training, expected na mananalo kami ngayon,” AB team captain Catherine David said. “I believe walang pagkukulang [‘yung team], siguro kabado lang. Hindi pa lang din siguro namin alam sa sarili namin ‘yung capacity namin.”
AB Men’s Volleyball Team will battle against the Alfredo M. Velayo College of Accountancy in their first game on Oct. 20, 2 p.m. at the P. Noval Court. F MIKKAH F. FACTOR
