Obiena bows out early in Oslo Bislett Games

AFTER SETTLING for a fifth-place finish earlier in the week, Thomasian pole vaulter Ernest John “EJ” Obiena notched a no mark at the Wanda Diamond League held in Oslo, Norway on Thursday, June 12.

The two-time Olympian skipped the opening height of 5.40 meters, but was unable to clear the 5.62m mark after exhausting all three attempts, finishing last in the 10-man competition.

Obiena opened a busy week in Europe by competing in the FBK Games in the Netherlands on Monday, finishing fifth via countback.

“I No Heighted… This is sport sometimes…” Obiena said in a social media story.

World’s best Armand Duplantis of Sweden came out on top after setting a competition record of 6.15m to claim his seventh win of the year.

The reigning gold medalist already secured the victory after clearing 5.92m l,but went on to vault two more heights.

Greek vaulter Emmanouil Karalis took silver with a height of 5.82m, while Australia’s Kurtis Marschall settled for bronze after clearing 5.72m.

With the loss, Obiena ended his medal streak in the Diamond League after receiving silver in 2024 and a bronze in 2023.

Obiena will attempt to regain footing in the upcoming Bauhaus-Galan competition in Stockholm on Sunday, June 15. F
