AFTER A short chapter in Katipunan, former Tiger Cub Carl Manding has headed back home to pick up where he left off with the UST basketball program.
The 19-year-old cager’s decision to return to España was finalized two weeks ago, UST Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) director Fr. Rodel Cansancio, O.P. told The Flame.
“One reason he [Manding] mentioned is his love for UST, where he feels a strong sense of belonging,” Cansancio said on Thursday, August 6.
“It’s wonderful to see him rejoining the team. This is a testament to the enduring power of loyalty and familiarity,” he added.
Manding announced his exit from the Tigers’ lair after finishing high school back in June, as he wanted to try out for veteran tactician Tab Baldwin’s Ateneo Blue Eagles.
The 6-foot-2 winger only participated in training camps with the Blue Eagles, but did not suit up in an official UAAP game, giving him five full years of eligibility.
A member of the Gilas Youth, Manding was a key piece of the Season 87 Tiger Cubs that ended UST’s 24-year title drought in the UAAP boys’ basketball tournament. He averaged 8.5 points and five boards during their historic run.
Manding will join a deep UST squad headlined by stars Nic Cabañero, Forthsky Padrigao, Kyle Paranada, Mark Llemit, Ice Danting and Amiel Acido. He will also reunite with former high school teammates Koji Buenaflor and Charles Bucsit.
Manding is part of the Tigers’ lineup in the Manuel L. Quezon Athletics Association tournament, where they hold a 4-2 win-loss record. F
