THE UNIVERSITY Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) formally launched its inaugural golf tournament as a demo sport, marking a pivotal expansion of its athletic program and reinforcing its alignment with national sports development goals.

UAAP Board of Directors president Fr. Rodel Cansancio, O.P. framed the initiative as a defining step forward for the league.

“Today marks a historic milestone as golf formally takes its place in the UAAP’s roster of sports,” Cansancio said during the launch on Monday, April 20 at The Country Club in Sta Rosa, Laguna.

The rollout was highlighted by the UAAP-ICTSI Invitational Golf Tournament, which serves as a precursor to the official competition set for May 11–14, 2026 at Tagaytay Midlands Golf Club.

Beyond competition, the invitational also carries a more communal purpose within the league.

“As mentioned by ED Rebo [Executive Director Rebo Saguisag], the reason we are holding this invitational is to have some downtime with the UAAP community,” Cansancio said.

“At the same time, it gives us a preview of the talent, sportsmanship, and level of competition we can expect.”

Central to the launch is the newly formalized partnership between the UAAP and International Container Terminal Services, Inc., through Philippine Golf Tour Inc.. The agreement, sealed through a contract signing during the event, is expected to provide structural and developmental support for the tournament moving forward.

“This partnership is expected to yield substantial benefits for the UAAP and, most importantly, for our student-athletes,” Cansancio said.

The inclusion of golf stems from a recommendation by Patrimonio Gregorio III, aligning with the Philippine Sports Development Program’s directive to prioritize Olympic-aligned disciplines. For the UAAP, the move signals a long-term investment in building competitive pathways.

“Our goal here is continuity—to build a clear pathway from grassroots participation, through collegiate competition, and onward to the world stage,” Cansancio said.

Among the sports proposed—including gymnastics, boxing, and weightlifting—golf was selected as the entry point, largely due to its existing collegiate presence.

Programs from University of the Philippines, Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University and University of Santo Tomas have long been active in inter-school tournaments, making the transition to an official UAAP event a natural progression.

“We are formalizing and elevating an existing collegiate tradition into the official UAAP program,” Cansancio said.

For the athletes, the tournament offers more than just another competitive stage—it becomes a proving ground.

“To all our student-athletes: this is your platform. May this golf tournament hone not only your skills, but also the character and discipline that define champions,” the UAAP board president  said.

“Let us move Philippine sports forward, one fairway at a time.” F
