AB basketball teams advance undefeated to Goodwill quarterfinals

GIANAN THE FACULTY of Arts and Letters’ (AB) Women’s and Men’s basketball teams both advanced to the quarterfinals of the Thomasian Goodwill Games after their flawless runs in the round robin stage. AB Women’s trashed the College of Architecture (Arki), 49-18, on the back their steel defenses. Arki’s sloppy start allowed AB to gain an early lead, 12-8, with Celine Cordero landing back-to-back field goals with a three-pointer in the first quarter. Multiple steals and interceptions by Trizia Oliver widened the gap in the second quarter, 29-14, keeping Arki at bay. TAMARES THE FACULTY of Arts and Letters (AB) basketball teams dominated in their opening games in this year’s Thomasian Goodwill Games, with the men’s team sweeping the Alfredo M. Velayo (AMV) College of Accountancy, 72-58, while the women overcame the Institute of Information and Computing Sciences (IICS), 50-18. AB Men’s readable passes and lack of rebounds in the first quarter allowed AMV a 10-point lead. The team decreased the deficit to four points through more aggressive attacks, 16-12. BIONG AFTER A double overtime, the Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB) Men’s Basketball Team fell prey against last season’s first runner-up Institute of Physical Education and Athletics (IPEA) during the do-or-die quarterfinals of this year’s Thomasian Goodwill Games, 83-88. With IPEA on the lead, AB’s top-scorer Janrey Garrido gave the men in blue their chance to snatch the victory after scoring a two-point shot in the last few seconds of the fourth quarter, 68-68, forcing an overtime. Just as AB was about to cap the game with a two-point lead, IPEA, however, managed to score and tied the game again at 79-79, causing another overtime. DINO THE FACULTY of Arts and Letters (AB) Men’s Basketball Team secured a spot in the quarterfinals of this year’s Thomasian Goodwill Games after disposing the College of Tourism and Hospitality Management (CTHM) in a head-to-head battle, 68-66, Friday at P.Noval Court. Leading AB to its fourth straight win were Janrey Garrido with 18 points, and Nicko Bahia with 15 points. Both squads started hot but AB prevailed in the first half of the game, 37-34. Noval Court. Fast breaks and feints from AB’s Nicko Bahia snatched an early lead for the men-in-blue, 18-6. Despite Ecclesiastical Studies’ efforts to beef up its defense, AB still held the team back in the second quarter, 32-17. Noval Court. Science snatched the lead from AB early in the fourth quarter, 56-52, through Enzo Montes’ three-point jumpshot and Mark Remorozo’s lay-up. Determined to go back to its momentum, AB blasted a 4-0 run through the efforts of Nicko Bahia and Kiko Banal, 60-56. THE FACULTY of Medicine and Surgery (Medicine) Men’s Basketball Team survived a late game rally from the Faculty of Arts and Letters (AB) Men’s Basketball Team, denying the Dapitan-based squad its first win in this year’s Thomasian Goodwill Games, 77-73, at the Quadricentennial Pavilion last Feb. 28. Medicine’s main gunner Josemarie Adornado finished with 24 points, while Allen Madrazo dropped 16 points. Giuseppe Punzalan and Emmanuel Bahia, on the other hand, led AB with 17 and 16 points, respectively.
