FOR MONTHS, the athletes battled in courts, fields, tracks, and arenas driven by ambition, discipline, and school pride.
They competed for medals, championships, and legacy.
But as the lights dim on UAAP Season 88, the athletes who defined this year’s triumphs and heartbreaks were given something different: a standing ovation not just for what they won, but for everything they endured to get there.
In an unprecedented move, the University Athletic Association of the Philippines closing ceremony stepped away from the conventional format of medal tables and formal acknowledgments. Instead, under the direction of host University of Santo Tomas, the season finale was reimagined as an Oscar-inspired show—a red-carpet celebration designed to honor athletes not merely as competitors, but as stars.
For Fr. Christopher Aytona, production committee head of the UAAP Season 88 closing ceremony, the vision was clear from the beginning: if the opening ceremony elevated expectations, the closing had to elevate appreciation.
“The opening ceremony left a lasting mark on the entire UAAP community and on Thomasians here and abroad,” Aytona said.
“It was truly one for the books. It raised the standard for what a UAAP opening ceremony could be—world-class, inspiring, and unforgettable.”
That success, however, was accompanied by a challenge.
“Preparing the closing ceremony became both an honor and a challenge. Expectations were naturally high,” Aytona said.
But instead of attempting to outdo the grand opening rites, UST chose something more meaningful: celebration with purpose.
“We wanted the closing ceremony to become a fitting tribute to the athletes of UAAP Season 88,” Aytona said.
“Beyond medals and victories, we honor their sacrifices, discipline, perseverance, and love for their respective sports and universities.”
And so came the perfect metaphor.
“An Oscar-inspired celebration, with its red carpet welcome and grand production, became the perfect way to recognize them and encapsulate the season’s theme: Strength in Motion, Hope in Action,”the head of the league’s production team said.
More Than an Ending
At its core, the ceremony is not simply a closing program. It is an emotional punctuation mark of a season defined by resilience.
“The message is embodied in the season’s theme itself,” Aytona said.
“Sports demand enduring strength. Athletes constantly push themselves beyond limits in pursuit of excellence, yet human weakness and limitations remain part of every journey.”
It is in that tension between striving and struggle that UST wants the UAAP community to find something deeper.
“But amid these realities, there is hope, and hope never disappoints,” Aytona said.
In a sporting landscape often obsessed with winners and losers, Aytona offers a broader definition of triumph: “In every competition, there will always be victories and defeats. Yet in sports, those who give their all, who rise after every fall, and who compete with integrity and heart are already winners.”
For UST, that may be the most important legacy in hosting Season 88.
“As host, UST hopes to remind everyone that UAAP Season 88 was not only about competition, but also about celebrating the human spirit,” Aytona said.
An evening for athletes
The glamour begins before the first applause.
The night opened with a red carpet welcome, transforming athletes—usually seen in jerseys and warm-up gear—into honored guests stepping into a ceremony crafted entirely around them. A cocktail reception followed, setting the tone for an evening that blended prestige with gratitude.
But the celebration goes far beyond aesthetics.
“We have gathered some of the finest Thomasian performers,” Aytona said, referring to talents from the UST Conservatory of Music, the UST Singers, and the UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe.
“Even the dinner experience has been thoughtfully prepared. Every element of the evening was designed to make our athletes feel celebrated and appreciated, because this event is ultimately dedicated to them.”
In many ways, the closing ceremony mirrors an awards gala—but with athletes at the center, their stories elevated to the same level of artistry and admiration as any cinematic triumph.
Symbols of triumph
As with the opening rites, symbolism remains central to the ceremony’s emotional architecture.
“One of the most recognizable symbols in sports is the trophy and the medal,” Aytona said.
“More than mere prizes, they represent glory earned through hard work, discipline, sacrifice, perseverance, and unwavering commitment.”
But the trophies awarded that night are not merely endpoints.
“They become affirmations of the athletes’ passion, dedication, and love for both their sport and their university.”
Then comes perhaps the ceremony’s most poignant image, the formal handover of the torch to the next host university.
“The extinguishing of the UST cauldron’s flame, symbolizing the athletes’ passion, determination, and competitive spirit, will mark the official conclusion of UAAP Season 88,” Aytona said.
“Even as one flame is extinguished, another will eventually be lit. This ending therefore also signifies a new beginning—a passing on of the spirit of the UAAP to the next generation of athletes who will continue to inspire, strive, and dream.”
Beyond the podium
Traditional awarding ceremonies celebrate results. But this one sought to celebrate journeys.
“For many athletes, this may indeed feel different—and we sincerely hope it does,” Aytona said.
“Beyond awards and accolades, we wanted to create an experience that makes them feel genuinely valued, celebrated, and honored.”
For athletes who spent the year training in obscurity, sacrificing time, enduring pressure and carrying the hopes of their schools, perhaps that recognition matters most.
“This program is not simply about recognizing achievements but about acknowledging the dedication, sacrifices, and stories behind every athlete’s journey,” Aytona added.
“If this celebration leaves them with a sense of pride, gratitude, and belonging, then we believe we have fulfilled our purpose,” Aytona said.
As the lights dim and the final applause echoes through the hall, UAAP Season 88 officially comes to an end.
But for one night, as the torch is passed and the flame goes out, the athletes are not just remembered as champions.
They were treated like stars. F
