Former Lady Fencers haul podium finishes in 3rd leg of PFA senior rankings

TWO FORMER members of the UST Fencing team bagged medals during the third leg of the Philippine Fencing Association (PFA) Senior Rankings on July 4-5, at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum. 

UST alumnus and national team member Janna Catantan finished second in the Senior Women’s Foil event after falling to her sister Samantha Catantan in the finals.

Meanwhile, erstwhile Lady Fencer Kim Shaznee Tuy secured a bronze finish at the Senior Women’s Saber tilt after bowing to Jylyn Nicanor in the semifinals.

Catantan, the UAAP Season 87 MVP, opted to forego Season 88 to focus on her studies in preparation for her upcoming licensure examinations.

Tuy last saw action for UST in their Season 88 championship bout against the UE Lady Warriors, where the Lady Fencers fell short of back-to-back crowns. 

Lady Fencer Aubrey Fernandez also secured a ninth place finish in Senior Women’s Foil, while fellow Thomasians Sharlanne Gonzales, Ruby Sardenia, Aila Sison, and Erich Corpuz rounded out the 32-man event. 

UST fell short of securing awards in Senior Women’s Épée, as Dahlia Capuno, Rodgelyn Raguin and Althea Lopez finished outside the top three.

All three Lady Fencers hauled in top 10 finishes in Senior Women’s Saber., Aside from Tuy, Kathleen Tuy and Ma. Estellah Gillana took part in the event, placing sixth and eight, respectively. 

In the men’s division, Tiger Fencers John Malinao, Kieth Bernal, Christian Sarmiento, Reynaldo de Guzman, Nathaniel Bernal, Rafael Corsiga and Ian Miranda represented UST in the Senior Men’s Épée. 

Two Tiger Fencers competed in the 63-man Senior Men’s Saber event, namely, Julian Dayro and Eilrahc Sendico, who finished 12th and 14th, respectively. 

Five more Thomasians participated in the final men’s event, as Ranzel Aberilla, Rayne Maravilla, Ryan Maninang, Luis Ramirez, and Joaquin Chan competed in Senior’s Foil. 

The PFA Senior Rankings are designed to assess and rank young fencers over five legs held throughout the year. F
