AN AUTHOR and faculty member of the UST Department of Creative Writing won third place in this year’s Komisyon sa Wikang Filipino (KWF) Sanaysay ng Taon, an annual essay competition for writers across the country.
Artlets instructor Mark Angeles’ achievement was announced in a KWF Facebook post on Aug. 13. He is set to receive the award on Aug. 27 at the KWF’s Bunyi: Gabi ng Parangal.
His winning piece is titled “Artipisyál ma’y Nakikipagkápuwâ: Artificial Intelligence at ang Buháy na Wikà’t Dánas ng Filipíno,” which tackles the limitations of the technology in terms of understanding human emotions and replicating them through mechanical responses.Angeles finished his undergraduate degree in Journalism at the Polytechnic University of the Philippines in 2001 and pursued his master’s degree in Filipino – Malikhaing Pagsulat at the University of the Philippines – Diliman.
The Artlets instructor teaches Filipino courses at the Faculty of Arts and Letters. He is also a resident fellow of the Center for Creative Writing and Literary Studies.
Angeles has joined several writing contests in the Philippines and won various awards.He was a recipient of the Don Carlos Palanca Memorial Awards for Literature in 2010, 2013, 2016 and 2018. In 2019, Angeles was named Poet of the Year at the Philippines Graphic Nick Joaquin Literary Award. He was also named Mananaysay ng Taon in 2023 by the KWF.
The KWF contest carried the theme “Wikang Filipino at AI: Kasangkapan sa Pananaliksik at Tulay sa Yaman ng Impormasyon” and coincided with the celebration of Buwan ng Wika. F
