AFTER 20 years, the Chorus of Arts and Letters (AB Chorale) finally found the perfect melody as it snagged the championship in this year’s Himig Tomasino held May 28 at the Medicine Auditorium.

AB Chorale also received the Best Interpretation of Contest Piece award while Mark Raeniel Agpasa was once again named Best Conductor.

“Last year, second runner-up kami. Nagulat nga ako na nag-champion kami ngayon. Talagang sinabi ko sa kanila na mag-hardwork kayo, trabahuhin niyo talaga na i-retain ‘yung place niyo last year or umangat kayo,” Agpasa said.

Each competing team sang a chosen piece and own rendition of “Psalm 100” composed by Thomasian choral conductor Fidel Gener Calalang, Jr. AB Chorale mesmerized the audience with its rendition of Laudate Dominum.

“We tried to connect our sound as a choir. […] Gusto naming balanse kami as a group and in-aim talaga namin na well-blended kami lahat, both within the section and within the chorus,” AB Chorale president Niccolo Ventenilla told the Flame.

‘Yung passion talaga namin for music and ‘yung drive namin to make beautiful music [are] what drove us, I guess, to the championship,” Ventenilla said.

The UST College of Science Glee Club and One Voice Engineering Chorale were hailed first and second runners-up, respectively. UST Medicine Glee Club grabbed the Best in Contest Apparel award.

The College of Nursing’s Coro De Ruiseñores, Pharmacy Glee Club, College of Architecture’s Arkipella Mix Ensemble, and College of Fine Arts and Design’s CFAD Himig also participated in the contest.

Himig Tomasino is the annual intercollegiate chorale competition organized by the Student Organizations Coordinating Council (SOCC) and the Musikang Sikat ng mga Tomasino (MUSIKAT). ANGELIQUE ANNE F. TORRES
